In March, R&M's new chief executive said 2025 had come in below expectations and laid out the response: "reduce complexity in the product world and organization" and harmonise key connectivity product groups globally (R&M, March 2026). Sales closed at CHF 260.3m, down 2.6%, on a 2.4% EBIT margin. Switzerland and Germany, the home markets, fell 10%. Data centre grew 15%; LAN and German FTTH didn't.
That plan is rational. In their seat I'd probably write the same one. But if their products sit on your line card, or any premium maker's thick catalogue does, the sentence worth rereading is the one about reducing complexity in the product world.
What harmonisation does to a catalogue
I've sat through a few portfolio rationalisations in my years in telecom, and they follow a pattern. Product groups merge. Global SKUs replace regional variants. And the complexity being reduced lives at the low-volume end: the odd lengths, the regional specials, the variants a handful of customers reorder year after year.
R&M has published no discontinuation list, and I'm not claiming one exists. But "reduce complexity" only points one way for the long tail of any catalogue, and it's safer to assume some of your tail is on somebody's list than to assume none of it's.
Why the long tail is a distributor's problem
The tail is where repeat business lives. The odd pigtail length a utility standardised on years ago. The wall box written into a frame contract by exact part number.
When a variant disappears, the revenue doesn't move itself to the harmonised replacement. The customer's spec no longer matches anything on your card, the install base still needs feeding, and the customer starts shopping. Losing the line item is cheap; losing the account that reordered it every quarter is the bill.
An afternoon of homework
Pull the line card and sort by brand. Flag the SKUs that are single-sourced to one premium maker and sit at the low-volume end. That's your exposure map, and building it takes an afternoon.
Then ask your rep the plain question: which product groups get harmonised, and on what timeline? You're owed a plain answer, and what you hear decides whether this stays a filing exercise or becomes a project.
For the exposed part of the tail, line up a second source while there's no pressure: a spec cross-reference, test reports against the original part, a paid sample. A discontinuation notice with 6 months' runway is a bad moment to start that work.
And decide whose name goes on the replacement. If part of the tail has to requalify anyway, that's the natural moment to weigh an own-label line at factory margin. I made the fuller case for that in the own-label piece on this site.
The gap in the market for odd lengths
The structural problem with the long tail is that the alternatives are thin. The big webshops sell volume under their own brand, and short custom batches are exactly what their model avoids. The premium makers quote months for specials, and small runs are the complexity they're shedding. A tail needs a factory that builds odd lengths and small batches to spec, quickly, and will print your label on them if you want it.
Where I stand in this
I should be plain about my interest. Jupiter Enterprises, our agency in Amsterdam, represents fibre-optic manufacturers commercially in Europe. One of them, PDR World, has built to spec for over 40 years, for Siemens, ABB, Alstom, Hitachi and Colt among others, and supplies India's tier-1 carriers at deployment scale: product shipped under the operator's spec and marking, passing the operator's acceptance testing batch after batch. Own-label failure modes get found by a carrier's acceptance lab long before a distributor's customer would find them.
Build-to-order is the other half. Odd lengths, small batches and custom configurations are the factory's normal day, built and air-freighted in days.
